Service offers in urban areas – European comparisons
Large urban areas are major tourist destinations. As gateways to different areas they are a popular destination for tourists, especially for international tourists.
Urban areas are aware of the economic impact of tourism, and are seeking to develop their tourism offers. In this context, the question of mobility in towns is of paramount importance in developing the influence and reputation of urban areas: their attractiveness is measured not only by the fame of their monuments or the events that are organized there, but also by the ease of travel to and within the towns.
This document looks at urban mobility services aimed at individual tourists, focusing in particular on public transport provision. What are these services? What communication strategies are implemented to make people aware of them? What fare system applies? The publication seeks to answer these questions on the basis of a panorama of 26 French urban areas, whose practices are put in perspective with the experiences of fifteen or so European urban areas of comparable size.

A look at medium-sized tourist towns
Small and medium-sized tourist towns are often faced with the problem of travel for their visitors and
residents. They must succeed in reconciling the attractiveness of the site and quality of traffic for everyone.
They therefore often take initiatives to diversify and optimize the transport service in the area, thereby
facilitating access to their site and movement within it, by modes other than private cars.
Based on the best practices of seven French cases examined in detail, this publication aims to show local
stakeholders what potential there is to improve tourist travel, whether by active modes, public transport
or car, providing a unique perspective on the importance of information to tourists and of governance and
partnerships within an area.

Organizing travel for event tourism
Travel management for an event localized in space and time (such as a football match or concerts) has been
the subject of recent studies and publications. Interest here is focused on travel management practices of
towns facing high dispersion of mass resident and visitor ridership in several districts in the same town. All
modes of transport are involved: public transport, cars, pedestrians (including people with reduced mobility),
cyclists, etc. Particular attention is given to trips made within the perimeter of the event.
The main objective of the study is to make recommendations to future event organizers. These recommendations
are based on specific examples and testimonials from various local authorities or State services. Seven events
were studied: the Rouen Armada, the Eurockéennes in Belfort, the Fêtes de Bayonne, the Braderie de Lille,
the Fête des Lumières in Lyon, the Christmas market in Strasbourg and the London Olympic Games. A brief
description of each of these events is available in the appendix. The events chosen have certain points in
common (high attendance, complex transportation management issues, etc.) and different characteristics
(type of event, type of audience, rural or urban environment, site size, etc.).
